Planning a trip to Todra Gorge

The Todra Gorge sits just above Tinghir, where a river has cut a corridor through the limestone of the High Atlas. At its narrowest the canyon closes to around ten metres wide with walls rising some 300 metres on either side — you drive in along the riverbed and the sky becomes a strip overhead. It is one of the few places on a Morocco itinerary that is genuinely startling from inside the car.

Most tours stop here on the road between the Dades Valley and the desert, which makes it a natural half-morning: walk the flat stretch of road through the narrows, then carry on. The palm groves below Tinghir are worth the extra twenty minutes if your itinerary has room.

Rock climbers know the gorge for its bolted limestone routes, and the walls are busy in spring and autumn. If you climb and want a day on the rock rather than a photo stop, tell us before we build the itinerary — it changes where you sleep.

Questions about Todra Gorge

Do you have to walk far to see the gorge?

No. The road runs straight through the narrowest section, so you can see the best of it on a flat ten-minute stroll from where we park. Longer walks up the valley are possible if you want them.

Is Todra better than Dades?

They are different rather than ranked. Todra is a single dramatic slot with sheer walls; Dades is a longer valley of kasbahs and switchback road with more variety. Most of our itineraries include both, one after the other.
