Ouzoud is the biggest waterfall in North Africa — roughly 110 metres, falling in stages into a green gorge about two and a half hours north-east of Marrakech.

A path switchbacks down through olive terraces to the pool at the base, where small boats take you close enough to feel the spray. Barbary macaques live in the trees along the upper path and are entirely used to people.

How hard is the walk down?

Twenty to thirty minutes down a stepped path, and rather more coming back up. It is the one genuinely tiring part of the day; take it slowly and carry water.

Can I swim?

People do, in the pools below the falls. Bring a towel if you intend to — the water is cold year round.
