Overview

Marrakech and a desert night, without the drive south

What this 3-day private Morocco tour from Marrakech covers, how the driving days are paced, and who it suits best.

This is the short break for travellers who want Marrakech properly and a desert camp night, but do not have the week it takes to reach the Sahara and come back. Agafay sits 40–45 minutes from the city, so you spend your time in the places themselves rather than on the road to them.

Day one settles you into the Red City and its evening rhythm on Jemaa el-Fna. Day two is a guided walk through the historic southern Medina — the Bahia Palace, the Saadian Tombs, the Kasbah and the souks — before an afternoon transfer out to camp. Day three is sunrise, breakfast and an unhurried return, timed around your flight.

One thing to be clear about: Agafay is a rocky, lunar desert of pale stone hills, not the sand dunes of Merzouga. It gives you the camp, the silence, the camel ride and the stargazing within an hour of Marrakech. If it is the great Erg Chebbi dunes you are picturing, that is a different trip and needs at least three days each way — tell us and we will build it instead.

  • Guided Medina tourBahia Palace, the Saadian Tombs, the Kasbah and the souks — the historic southern Medina in one comfortable day.
  • A night in AgafayA private tent in the stone desert, 40–45 minutes from the city. Dinner under the stars with local music.
  • Sunset and sunriseA camel ride as the light goes, then sunrise over the Agafay hills with the Atlas on the horizon.
  • No long drivesThe whole trip stays within an hour of Marrakech, so three days is three days — not two of them in the car.

Itinerary

Day by Day: 3 Days Marrakech & Agafay Desert

Day-by-day itinerary with the route driven each day, overnight stops and meals — Agafay.

  1. Day1

    Arrival in Marrakech

Arrival in Marrakech and private transfer to your riad or hotel. After check-in and time to settle, a first introduction to the Red City: in the late afternoon you walk through the Medina and reach Jemaa el-Fna, which comes alive around sunset as the food stalls and musicians set up. Free time to wander the souks at your own pace, and dinner on a rooftop over the square if you would like us to book one.

    Overnight: Marrakech

  2. Day2

Marrakech City Tour → Agafay Desert

After breakfast, a guided tour of the highlights of Marrakech: the Bahia Palace, the Saadian Tombs, the Kasbah and the traditional souks of the Medina, with the exterior of the Koutoubia Mosque as time and interest allow. These sit close together in the historic southern Medina and combine comfortably into one day. After lunch and a little more of the Medina, you leave Marrakech in the afternoon for the Agafay Desert, roughly 40–45 minutes away. You settle into your private tent, then ride out by camel at sunset. Dinner is traditional Moroccan, served under the stars with local music.

    Overnight: Agafay Desert Camp

  3. Day3

    Agafay Sunrise → Departure

Wake early for sunrise over the Agafay landscape, with the Atlas Mountains on the horizon. Breakfast at camp, then free time to relax and take photographs before your private transfer back to Marrakech. Depending on your departure time there is usually room for a last walk through the Medina, some shopping, or one final add-on before your airport transfer — a traditional hammam and massage and the Majorelle Garden are the two most people choose.

Please note: the price shown is a guide price per person. Rates can change during the high season — Easter, July and August, Christmas and New Year — and with your choice of accommodation. Contact us for an exact quote for your dates.

Frequently Asked Questions

About the 3 Days Marrakech & Agafay Desert

Common questions about this Marrakech departure — pickup, the Sahara desert camp, luggage, children and payment.

Is Agafay the same as the Sahara?

No, and it is worth knowing before you book. Agafay is a rocky, lunar desert of pale stone hills about 40–45 minutes from Marrakech. The Sahara sand dunes at Merzouga are roughly nine hours away by road. Agafay gives you a desert camp, silence, a camel ride and stargazing on a short break; it does not give you the great dunes.

Why choose this over a 3-day Sahara tour?

Time in the places rather than on the road. A 3-day trip to Merzouga and back spends two of its three days driving. This one keeps everything within an hour of Marrakech, so you get a proper guided day in the Medina as well as a night under canvas.

What is the camp like?

A private tent with a real bed and its own bathroom, dinner served communally or privately depending on the camp, and no light pollution. Camp standards vary from comfortable to genuinely luxurious — tell us your budget and we will match the camp to it.

Can you extend it or add the Atlas Mountains?

Yes. A day in the Ourika or Imlil valleys slots in naturally either side, and a fourth day turns this into a comfortable Marrakech, Atlas and Agafay week-end-plus. Ask us and we will re-shape the itinerary around your flights.

Do we need to be fit for the camel ride?

No. It is a short, gentle ride at walking pace over flat ground, and it is entirely optional — plenty of guests skip it and walk out to the viewpoint instead, or swap it for a quad-bike ride.
