Planning a trip to Marrakech

Marrakech is where most Morocco trips begin, and it is the best-connected starting point for the south. The medina, the Koutoubia minaret and the evening crush of Jemaa el-Fna are the reasons to give the city itself a day or two before you drive anywhere.

For touring, what matters is that Marrakech sits on the near side of the High Atlas. Cross the Tizi n'Tichka pass and you are in Ouarzazate in about four hours, at Aït Ben Haddou shortly after, and at the dunes by the end of a long second day. That geography is why our Marrakech itineraries run from three days to two weeks and all follow broadly the same road out.

If you only have three days, you will spend most of them driving to and from Merzouga. It is worth doing, but go in knowing that. Six days or more turns the same route into a proper circuit with time in the gorges and the kasbah valleys.

How many days do I need in Marrakech itself?

One full day covers the Koutoubia, the souks and Jemaa el-Fna at dusk. Two lets you add the Bahia Palace, the Majorelle garden or a hammam without rushing. Beyond that, your time is better spent on the road south.

Do your tours pick up from the airport or the riad?

Either. We collect from your riad, hotel or the airport at a time you choose — the medina's pedestrian lanes mean we sometimes meet at the nearest vehicle access point, and we will tell you exactly where beforehand.
