Planning a trip to Fes
Fes el-Bali is the oldest continuously inhabited medina in the world and still the reason to come — nine thousand or so lanes, no cars, and the Chouara tanneries working much as they have for centuries. It rewards a guide more than almost anywhere else in Morocco, simply because navigation is otherwise most of the day.
As a touring base, Fes has one clear advantage over Marrakech: it is closer to the dunes. The road south through Ifrane and Midelt and down the Ziz Valley reaches Merzouga in seven to eight hours, which makes a three-day desert trip from Fes noticeably less punishing than the same trip from Marrakech.
Many travellers fly into Fes and out of Marrakech, or the reverse, and let the tour run one way across the country rather than doubling back. Most of our Fes itineraries are built that way.

Is Fes or Marrakech the better place to start?
Fes if the desert is your priority — it is two hours closer and the drive is gentler. Marrakech if you want the Atlas passes, Aït Ben Haddou and the kasbah road on the way out. Starting in one and finishing in the other avoids the choice entirely.
Do I need a guide inside the Fes medina?
It is the one place we genuinely recommend one. The lanes are unsigned and largely unmapped, and a local guide turns a stressful few hours into the best day of the trip. We arrange licensed city guides on request.
